Rumi Songs

This summer, Norwegian soprano Eldrid Gorset joined forces with the acclaimed Trygve Seim Trio for a memorable concert in Oppdal. The collaboration brought together Gorset’s luminous classical voice and Seim’s distinctive jazz universe, creating a unique meeting point between genres.

The program featured Seim’s Rumi Songs, settings of mystical poetry by the Persian poet Rumi, where lyrical, poetic melodies intertwine with his characteristic, atmospheric soundscapes. Rooted in jazz but infused with Nordic folk colors and classical sensitivity, the music offered both intimacy and depth. Gorset’s interpretation added a new dimension to Seim’s compositions, highlighting their expressive range and emotional resonance.

In addition, Gorset performed together with pianist Knut Erik Jensen in a classical section of the concert, presenting art songs by Aaron Copland (settings of Emily Dickinson’s poetry), Lili Boulanger, and Francis Poulenc. This part of the program showcased the breadth of Gorset’s artistry, moving seamlessly from the expressive world of 20th-century French and American song into the genre-crossing collaboration with Seim and his trio.

The concert was a celebration of artistic openness and cross-genre dialogue, where voice and instruments merged into a sound world both delicate and powerful.
